Message And they help the system perform as intended. The secondary function is tweeter protection. If a tweeter plays too low, it'll bottom and destroy itself in minutes.

That being said, there is a definite possibility the Alpine crossovers use better quality crossover components internally than the Pioneer. Size isn't a true indicator, unless you can see inside them. Air-core inductors are better for sound quality, and they're larger than ferrite core inductors, which the Pioneers use (judging by the photos on Pioneer's website). The new model of the Type-R components use an air core inductor, and the ACIs have been around for decades, so it's not likely a recent switch.

In 10 words or less, I'd try the Alpine crossovers for an easier installation. Definitely won't be worse quality wise, and the cross over point (not listed on either model) is probably within 500Hz or so of each other.
